7 The last part of the trailed couching is to outline both the leaves and the lollipops. Using one colour to outline every part of each lollipop will help to unify them, as there’s a lot going on. So the left-hand pale woad blue lollipop is outlined in dark indigo blue/bright china blue, the middle lollipop is outlined in pea green/grass green 255, and the right-hand lollipop is outlined with dark bottle green/Jacobean green.

8 The bird needs to be daintier than the big rugged tree on which he sits, so use split stitch for a finer line for his details and outline. How could he possibly be anything but a proud peacock with all those lovely blue-greens?

His main outline is strong madder red/scarlet, as are the central eyes on his tail, his eye and his crest. The indigo blue of his body is brought down into his tail by using it for the second outline around the eye and the central spine of the feather, with just a few little spots of blue to finish his crest. Undyed/ecru is used to surround the eye, delineate the central spines of the feathers and give him a row of spots along his body using pairs of tiny stab stitches.
